Sweet 16 Hope Chest Makeover

I finally collected my pictures and now have my first “DIY On Purpose” ready!  I have to confess, most of my “do it yourself” projects involve painting!  In my opinion, it is the cheapest and fastest way to spruce up a room or a piece of furniture. It just makes it all look new again.

Lane hope chest given to me by my parents for my sixteenth birthday! After almost forty years, it definitely needed a makeover!

My go-to first coat is always Kilz Latex primer.  It covers most surfaces well and dries quickly.  Love that part because patience is not one of my virtues!

I wanted a very basic color because this chest will be placed in a guest bedroom with a tan and cream color scheme.  This is Valspar “Soul Chocolate” from Lowes.

I had never tried stenciling but I wanted to dress up the brown chest a little.  I probably should have gone a little larger, but I’m satisfied with the turnout.

Martha Stewart stencil from Amazon.  This pack has multiple sizes and several designs. Similar design is linked.

Yay!  Love how it turned out! I was afraid I would be disappointed with the plain brown color but I streaked the second coat a little so it would have a “not so new” look.

I like the contrast of the dark and light.  Bed duvet set and picture above bed came from Overstock.com. My favorite online home decor source!
